My Open Letter To Gert-Johan Coetzee And Sophie Ndaba's Friends

Dear Gert-Johan Coetzee, you are one of my most favourite SA designers in fact if I could afford any of your designs, I'd only wear GJC. I remember when you designed a dress for one of the Kardashian sisters when they were here in SA a few years ago, I even blogged about it and you loved the blog post because it described your work in beautifully-written words (which were well-deserved, if you ask me). You recently showcased your Spring/Summer 2013 as well as your Sheer Collection at the SA Fashion Week not so long ago. When I saw your designs on Top Billing on Thursday I thought to myself, this guy is the future. You spoke of how you always dress each woman according to their body shape and size and we all saw the definition of what you were talking about when you dressed those three ladies (still on Top Billing) with three totally different bodies. I marveled at your creativity and ingenuity.

Come the SAMAs, you did your magic, naturally with everyone you dressed, except for one person- Sophie Ndaba!

Nc nc nc Gert mara!!!

When I saw Sophie Ndaba on TV presenting that award, I immediately recognized your design because Bonang Matheba had ROCKED it some weeks ago and it looked absolutely amazing on her. I then ask myself, Gert being someone who has shown deep understanding and appreciation for the female form why did he do that to Sophie:

These are the questions that need answer, Gert and Sophie's friends, please help us out.
  • Why did you dress two women who have bodies that are extreme opposites in the same revealing design?
  • How did you allow Sophie to walk out of your studio with that dress?
  • Your work is a representation of your brand, why did you do this?
  • Did any of her friends see her in that dress and what did they say?
  • Most importantly, how are you feeling about the outcome of all this?
I really feel sorry for Sophie Ndaba, you see, bad fashion choices happen to good people too.  Sorry Sophie, next time you will hopefully get it right.

  2. This post was not to bash Sophie or full figure women. She just did not dress right for her body. She should have gone for a different dress. If you are honest, you will also admit that this particular dress was not right for her body type. The one she wore to the afterparty was actually very pretty and looked amazingly great on her.

  3. I ve just read the comment and ive looked at both women with different shapes and I wondered what is wrong with Sophie's body type. She has got a pear shaped body and the dress showed just that.

Just because a skinny person wears a bikin to the beach does it make it wrong for the fuller figures woman to wear one too.

I just dont get what is wrong with her body type and what is her body type?when she came on stage to present an award everybody in the room wowed her cause the dress is long and covers her body nicely

  4. i totally agree with koko. i think that this dress is not flattering on sophies figure, the proportions of her body dont work with the dress, like it makes her thighs look huge and her hips look like their protruding, theres nothing wrong with being fuller figured, but then your body still needs to be toned, no one wants to see celulite and fat rolls... its a sad fact but it is the type of dress that only works on a smaller figure, the horizontal lines also make her look wider, and the sheerness of the fabric doesnt compliment the fact that she doesnt have any muscle tone, sophie is usually dressed very well, this was definitely not a good choice, its also quite strange that she would wear the same dress bonang wore, whats the point of being a fashion designer if you going to dress celebs up in the same things? fashion designers are becoming lazy and so they start putting everyone in stuff thats already made even though other celebs have been seen wearing it, the reason celebs go to designers and not to retail stores is cos they want something that no one else is going to have and something that is unique to them and has the exclusivity of a designer, wearing the same dress as another celeb is in bad taste and just looks like they shopping at the same place.. i respect that koko is honest enough to speak her mind, we are all allowed to have an opinion

    yours sincerely,
    concerned fashion student
